Galerina vs Psilocybe: The Full Feature-by-Feature Comparison

Galerina and Psilocybe are two different genera of small, brown, gilled mushrooms. Several Galerina species contain alpha-amanitin, the same peptide toxin as the death cap; several Psilocybe species contain psilocybin and psilocin. Some Galerina species look almost identical to some wood-loving Psilocybe species in the field. Confusion between them is the leading known cause of amatoxin poisoning among people who intended to pick "magic mushrooms."

Feature 1 — Spore print (the one reliable test)

To take a spore print at home, cut the stem, place the cap gill-side- down on a piece of white paper (put a strip of black paper underneath in case the spores are pale), cover with a bowl for 2–4 hours, and read the colour. Galerina marginata drops a rusty cinnamon-brown print. Every Psilocybe drops a purple-black to dark violet-brown print. No known Psilocybe species has a rusty spore print. This is the test NAMA teaches as the single most useful hard rule-out.

Feature 2 — Blueing reaction (suggestive, not diagnostic)

Wood-loving Psilocybe species — particularly P. cyanescens and P. subaeruginosa — bruise blue-green when the stem is handled or the cap is cut. The reaction is caused by the oxidation of psilocin. Galerina marginata does not bruise blue. Two important caveats: (1) some non-psilocybin mushrooms also blue, so blueing alone is not proof of Psilocybe; (2) faint or delayed blueing can be missed, so no visible blue reaction is not proof of Galerina. Blueing is a supporting feature, not a substitute for the spore print.

Feature 3 — Substrate does not help

Both genera colonise the same wood-based habitats. Documented poisoning cases include people who picked from the same mulch bed where P. cyanescens was fruiting a week earlier. Substrate is a place to look, not a place to identify.

Feature 4 — Ring on the stem

Galerina has a thin membranous ring on the upper stem. Wood-loving Psilocybe species typically have a fragile cobweb-like cortina that often disappears entirely, leaving only a dusting of dark spores. This can help — but ring absence in Galerina (after weathering) collapses this test.

Feature 5 — Cap and gill colour

Galerina caps are tawny-cinnamon when wet, ochre when dry. Wood-loving Psilocybe caps run caramel to chestnut brown when wet, drying to a paler creamy tan. Overlap is real. Gill colour is more reliable: mature Galerina gills are rust-brown (matching their spores); mature Psilocybe gills are dark chocolate to nearly black.

Feature 6 — Cluster habit

Both cluster. Density is similar. Not a discriminator.

Feature 7 — Odour and taste

Do not taste an unknown mushroom. Amatoxin doses are small enough that even a taste-and-spit test carries risk. Odour is not diagnostic — descriptions are subjective and overlap.

Why the field-guide approach fails here

Amatoxin poisoning has a 6–24 hour asymptomatic window. Foragers who misidentify Galerina feel completely fine that first evening. By the time symptoms hit — 12–24 hours later — the toxin has been binding RNA polymerase II in liver cells for the entire time. The American College of Emergency Physicians specifically flags delayed-onset GI symptoms after a mushroom meal as a red flag for amatoxin. This delay is what makes any identification error catastrophic — you find out you were wrong when your liver enzymes triple on day two.

What is the single most reliable way to tell Galerina from Psilocybe?

A spore print. Rusty-brown = Galerina. Purple-black = Psilocybe. No other single feature is as reliable. Every serious mycology extension and the North American Mycological Association teach this as the primary test.

Do all Psilocybe mushrooms bruise blue?

Most do — some reactions are strong (P. cyanescens), others subtle. But blueing is not exclusive to Psilocybe and does not by itself confirm the genus. Never treat a blue-green stem as clearance to eat.

Can I use a mushroom-ID app to tell Galerina from Psilocybe?

No. Photo-ID apps make identifications with confidence scores that do not reflect the medical stakes. A 90% confident "Psilocybe" is a 10% chance of a hospital admission. Poison centre toxicologists and mycology extensions do not consider apps a safe standard for amatoxin-risk species.

If a mushroom does not bruise blue, is it safe?

No. Absence of blueing does not tell you the mushroom is not toxic. Galerina does not blue, and Galerina can kill you. Spore print is the primary test; blueing is at best supporting evidence.

Is there a chemistry test I can do at home?

The Meixner (Wieland) test is a semi-quantitative amatoxin test using concentrated hydrochloric acid on newsprint. It produces false positives on any lignin-containing paper and is not reliable enough for field use. There is no home test that replaces professional identification and poison-centre triage.

Are all Galerina species deadly?

Not all — but the ones people confuse with Psilocybe (marginata / autumnalis / venenata, now a single species) are. Because species-level ID inside Galerina is hard, the safest rule is treat every small brown ringed wood-mushroom as potentially deadly until a professional says otherwise.
