The Pacific Northwest wood-mulch pairing foragers confuse most often — and the four features that actually separate them.
Galerina marginata and Psilocybe cyanescens are the two small brown wood-loving mushrooms most often confused with each other in the Pacific Northwest. Both fruit on hardwood chips and buried wood from late September through December. Both cluster. Both have honey-to- caramel caps that turn paler as they dry. One contains alpha-amanitin and can cause fatal liver failure; the other contains psilocybin. Landscape bark mulch and hardwood chip beds around parks, gardens, and university campuses in Oregon and Washington produce both species in the same season. Foragers hunting for P. cyanescens ("wavy caps") search exactly the habitat that produces Galerina. Multiple case reports collected by the NAMA Toxicology Committee describe pickers who took Galerina from the same bed where wavy caps had fruited a week earlier.

Cut the stem, place the cap gill-side-down on white paper, cover with a bowl for 2–4 hours. Galerina marginata drops a rusty cinnamon-brown print. Psilocybe cyanescens drops a dark purple-black print. This is the diagnostic single test.
P. cyanescens is famous for aggressive blueing. Handle a stem firmly and it turns blue-green in seconds to a minute. Galerina marginata does not blue at all. Blueing is not as diagnostic as spore print (some other genera also blue, and P. cyanescens can be slow to blue in cold weather), but in this specific pairing a complete absence of blue reaction on a fresh, firm-handled stem argues strongly against P. cyanescens.
P. cyanescens gets its common name "wavy cap" from the distinctive undulating margin on mature specimens. It also has a gelatinous, separable pellicle — when the cap is wet you can peel the skin off in strips. Galerina caps are smooth, symmetric, and hygrophanous but do not peel. Both features can be subtle on young caps.
Look at a mature cap after spore drop. Galerina gills are the same rusty brown as the spores. P. cyanescens gills darken to purple- brown or nearly black as spores mature. Young caps of either species have paler gills and this feature does not work.
The NAMA case registry and state poison-centre reports document pickers in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia who confused these two species. A Michigan case series by Mullins and Horowitz (2000) remains one of the frequently-cited references — a family that believed they were eating psilocybin mushrooms. One adult required a liver transplant. Beug and colleagues' broader NAMA registry summary (2006) catalogues over 2,000 mushroom poisoning cases and identifies amatoxin-containing species as the leading cause of fatalities in North America.
Wild P. cyanescens is Schedule I under federal law. Oregon permits adult use only at licensed Measure 109 service centres, and Colorado permits adult use only at Prop 122 healing centres — neither programme distributes wild-picked mushrooms. No. Both are hygrophanous — they change colour with moisture — and their moist-colour range overlaps in the caramel-to-chestnut band. Cap colour on its own is not a discriminator.
Almost always, especially on the lower stem when firmly handled. It can be slower in cold weather or on very fresh, dry specimens. Very old or decomposing caps may already have oxidised. Treat blueing as strong supporting evidence, never as the only test.
It is a genuine species feature of mature P. cyanescens — but young or button-stage caps do not show it yet. Do not treat a non-wavy cap as automatically Galerina, or a wavy cap as automatically Psilocybe.
Landscape mulch beds in Portland, Seattle, Eugene, Corvallis, and surrounding suburban parks and campuses are the classic setting. Both species colonise the same commercial hardwood chip mulch used in city landscaping. The bed itself does not tell you which mushroom you have.
Photos help but are not sufficient. Both species look different in person under different light and moisture. Use images from a university mycology extension or NAMA — not random social-media photos — and treat any comparison as narrowing the range, not as an ID.
