Pre-ceremony nutrition, hydration, supplements, sleep, and the foods to cut before a session.
Body prep for a psychedelic ceremony is the half of preparation people skip. They focus on intention and forget that the medicine acts on a tired, dehydrated, undersleep system.
The point is not to be perfect. The point is to walk in less reactive. Less reactive means less anxiety at the onset and easier integration after.
Cut alcohol completely. Trim caffeine by half. Start tracking water intake. Begin a 10-minute evening wind-down.
Lighter dinners. No fried food. Sleep target hits 8 hours. Begin gentle morning movement.
No cannabis from this point. No sleep aids. Coffee down to one small cup. Start eating earlier in the day.
Plant-forward meals. Skip heavy meats. Hydrate to 3 liters. Light yoga or walking; no heavy lifting.
Simple light dinner before 7 pm. No caffeine. Lights out by 10 pm. Re-read your intention card.

Ayahuasca contains MAOIs (harmine, harmaline). Tyramine-rich foods plus an MAOI can spike blood pressure. That is why ayahuasca retreats use a stricter dieta.
Avoid for 1–2 weeks before an ayahuasca ceremony:
Read the retreat's specific list. They override generic guides like this one.
Discuss every supplement with your prescriber, especially if you take psychiatric medication. Some supplements are serotonergic.
Aim for 2.5–3 liters of water per day for the 5 days before. Add electrolytes if you sweat heavily. Taper liquids 1–2 hours before the dose to limit bathroom trips during ceremony.
Aim for 7–9 hours per night for the 5 days before. No sleep aids in the last 3 days. If you take prescription sleep medication, talk to your prescriber about a short pause and how to reintroduce after.
The 7–14 days after the ceremony are when neuroplasticity is highest. Feeding the body well during this window supports integration.
Pair the body-prep work with our 30-day integration journal for the inner side of the same window.
The ayahuasca dieta is the pre-ceremony diet most retreats require — no tyramine-rich foods (aged cheese, cured meats, soy sauce), no pork, no alcohol, no recreational drugs, and limited salt and sugar. The window is usually 1–2 weeks. Strict because ayahuasca contains MAOIs and tyramine plus MAOI can spike blood pressure.
Some facilitators recommend amino acid blends in the 5 days before a ceremony to support neurotransmitter production. These are suggestions, not requirements. Discuss any new supplement with your prescriber, especially if you take psychiatric medication.
Eat a light, simple breakfast 4–6 hours before dosing. Skip heavy proteins, fried foods, and dairy. Hydrate well throughout the morning, then taper liquids 1–2 hours before to limit bathroom trips during ceremony.
Start with broth, fruit, or a light grain bowl. Avoid alcohol and heavy foods for at least 3 days. Many integration practitioners recommend continued amino acid support and magnesium for the first week.
Solid body prep for a psychedelic ceremony costs you almost nothing and pays compound interest on the experience. Print this guide. Combine it with our medication safety guide and intention setting guide. Then walk in steady.
