Key takeaways
  • The all-in total is the program fee plus travel, ground transport, extra nights, travel medical insurance, screening, integration sessions, unpaid days off and anything else, all in US dollars (USD).
  • In the worked example, a $2,200 Oregon session fee becomes a $3,670 trip, so the fee is 60% of the total and everything around it adds $1,470.
  • The typical fee range shown for each medicine and place comes from this site's guides and never enters the total, which uses only the quote you type.
  • Insurance does not cover any Oregon Measure 109 services, per the Oregon psilocybin guide, and the ibogaine guide says most US health insurance does not cover ibogaine treatment.
  • Blank fields count as zero, and no total shows until you enter a program fee above zero.

A psychedelic retreat costs the program fee plus everything around it: travel, extra nights, time off work, screening and integration. In the guides we publish here, we give typical fee ranges, and the calculator shows the range for the medicine and place you pick.

The psychedelic retreat cost calculator above adds the fee and those costs into one all-in figure in US dollars. The fee range is for reference, and the total is built only from the numbers you enter.

What the All-In Total Adds Up

The all-in total equals the program fee plus travel, ground transport, extra nights times cost per night, insurance, screening, integration sessions times fee per session, unpaid days times take-home pay per day, and other costs.

Take an out-of-state visitor to an Oregon service center as an illustration with example inputs. The session fee is $2,200, travel is $450, ground transport is $80 and one extra night costs $180. Insurance and screening are both $0.

Two integration sessions at $150 each come to $300. Two unpaid days at $200 of take-home pay each come to $400, and other costs are $60.

The sum is 2,200 + 450 + 80 + 180 + 300 + 400 + 60, which equals $3,670. The $2,200 fee is 60% of that total, and everything around the fee adds $1,470.

These numbers show the arithmetic and are not a price for any operator. The $3,670 total sits inside the $2,500 to $5,000 fully loaded range that the Oregon psilocybin guide gives for an out-of-state client once travel and lodging are included.

How to Use the Psychedelic Retreat Cost Calculator

The calculator takes ten inputs in a fixed order, and only the program fee is required before a total appears. The opening menu, "Medicine and place", shows a typical fee range from this site's guides and does nothing else. The next field, "Program fee you were quoted (USD)", is where the operator's quoted fee goes.

Travel comes next in "Flights or other travel there and back", followed by "Ground transport and transfers". The field "Nights of lodging the program does not include" takes a number of nights and a cost per night, and the calculator multiplies them. "Travel medical insurance" holds a single amount.

"Medical screening you pay for yourself" is for tests the operator asks for but does not include, such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or labs. "Integration sessions afterwards" takes a number of sessions and a fee per session. "Unpaid days off work" takes days and take-home pay per day, and you leave it blank when you are using paid leave.

"Anything else" catches the rest, such as a visa, meals outside the program or care at home while you are away. Blank, negative or non-numeric entries count as zero, and every figure is in US dollars.

Once a fee above zero is in, the result shows the all-in total, the fee as a percentage of the total and the amount everything around the fee adds. An itemised table lists every line that is not zero. "Copy the breakdown" copies that list, and "Print" prints only the result.

The calculator runs in your browser and saves nothing. Copy or print the breakdown before you close the page.

Typical Program Fees from Our Guides

The fee ranges shown in the "Medicine and place" menu come from this site's retreat guides, and none of them enters the total.

An Oregon Measure 109 psilocybin service session runs $1,500 to $3,000 or more per session, according to the Oregon psilocybin guide. That fee covers a preparation session, the administration session with a licensed facilitator and an integration session, and it does not cover lodging. The guide's tiers are $1,500 to $2,200 for group administration, $2,200 to $2,800 for one-on-one administration and $2,800 to $4,000 or more for premium.

Some Oregon centers offer sliding-scale slots with limited availability. The same guide's comparison table puts a Colorado Proposition 122 healing center at $1,500 to $3,500 or more per session. International psilocybin retreats in Jamaica, the Netherlands or Costa Rica run $1,200 to $8,000 for 3 to 7 days in that table.

A 7-day ayahuasca program runs $700 to $1,500 at the budget tier in Iquitos, Tulum or Medellín, according to the ayahuasca cost bands. Mid-range programs run $1,800 to $3,500, and upper-mid programs, typical in Costa Rica, run $3,500 to $5,500. Luxury or wellness-resort programs run $5,500 to $8,500 or more.

Ibogaine programs of 5 to 10 days run $3,000 to $5,500 at the budget or informal tier in Mexico, per the ibogaine cost table. Mid-tier programs in Mexico run $5,500 to $8,000, full medical programs in Mexico run $8,000 to $12,000 and regulated programs in Costa Rica run $8,000 to $15,000. Research-affiliated or premium programs run $12,000 to $25,000 or more.

A medically screened 5-MeO-DMT (5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine) retreat of 3 to 5 days in Mexico runs $2,500 to $5,500, per the 5-MeO-DMT guide. That guide says screening and integration are typically cut below $2,500. The ayahuasca guide also says very low prices typically mean cut screening and that cost is not a proxy for safety.

The retreat directory lists vetted operators by medicine and location, and inclusion there is not an endorsement.

Costs Outside the Program Fee

Travel, extra nights, insurance, screening, integration and unpaid time off can all sit outside a program fee, and each has its own field in the calculator.

The ayahuasca guide says international flights, travel medical insurance covering remote evacuation and ground transport add roughly $600 to $1,800 to any program from a US starting point. Added to a $1,800 mid-range fee, those travel costs put the trip at $2,400 to $3,600 before any other line. The same guide says that insurance is not optional for jungle settings.

Extra nights belong in the total whenever the program fee leaves lodging out, as the Oregon session fee does. Driving immediately after an Oregon session is not permitted, and the Oregon guide says most clients book accommodation locally for that night.

Health insurance does not cover any Oregon Measure 109 services. The ibogaine guide says most US health insurance does not cover ibogaine treatment because the substance is Schedule I in the US. It also says flights, ground transport and travel medical insurance are extra on top of ibogaine program fees.

Screening goes in only when the operator asks for a test it does not include, such as an EKG or labs. The Oregon session fee already includes one integration session, so enter only the sessions you add after that. To find someone for those added sessions, start with the psychedelic therapist finder.

Unpaid days count at your take-home pay per day, the money you lose by not working. Two unpaid days at $200 each add $400, as in the worked example.

When the Total Will Be Wrong for You

The total will be wrong when a quote is in another currency, when lodging gets counted twice, when paid leave is entered as unpaid days, or when the price changes after you run the numbers.

The calculator works in US dollars only. Convert a quote in another currency to US dollars before you type it into the fee field.

A deposit does not lower the total. The calculator adds the full fee and does not track deposits, due dates or refund terms. The ibogaine guide says some clinics offer payment plans and that those terms should be confirmed in writing.

The guide ranges are reference figures, and the operator's written quote is the only fee the total uses. If the operator revises the quote, run the calculator again with the new number.

If the program includes lodging for every night you stay, leave "Nights of lodging the program does not include" blank. Entering those nights would add a cost the fee already covers.

If you take paid leave, leave "Unpaid days off work" blank. That field counts lost take-home pay, and paid leave loses none.

Reading a Quote Before You Enter It

Read the operator's written quote for what the fee includes before you type it, because each item the fee covers is a field you leave blank.

Look for lodging, meals, transfers, screening and integration in the quote. If lodging is included, skip the extra-nights field for those nights. If transfers are included, leave ground transport blank for those trips.

If meals are included, use "Anything else" only for meals outside the program. If screening is part of the fee, leave the screening field blank, and if integration is included, count only sessions beyond the ones the fee covers.

The legal psilocybin booking checklist covers Oregon and Colorado license verification, cost breakdowns, facilitator questions and integration timing before you pay a deposit. Once the budget is set, the guide to what to bring to a psychedelic retreat covers packing.

Open the written quote, mark what it includes, and enter the remaining costs into the psychedelic retreat cost calculator above.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a psychedelic retreat cost in total?

The total is the program fee plus travel, ground transport, extra nights, travel medical insurance, screening, integration, unpaid days off and other costs. In the worked example on this page, a $2,200 Oregon session fee becomes $3,670 all in. The Oregon guide puts the fully loaded cost for an out-of-state client at typically $2,500 to $5,000.

Lodging is not included, driving immediately after the session is not permitted, and insurance does not cover any Measure 109 services.

Does insurance cover a psychedelic retreat?

Not for Oregon Measure 109 services, and usually not for ibogaine treatment. Insurance does not cover any Oregon Measure 109 services, and the ibogaine guide says most US health insurance does not cover ibogaine treatment because the substance is Schedule I in the US. Travel medical insurance is a separate cost with its own field in the calculator.

What costs do people forget when budgeting for a retreat?

Costs that sit outside a program fee include travel, ground transport, extra nights of lodging, screening tests the operator does not include, integration sessions afterwards and unpaid days off work. The calculator's "Anything else" field covers a visa, meals outside the program and care at home while away. The operator's written quote shows which of these the fee already includes.

Educational only. This calculator adds up the numbers you enter. It is not financial, medical or legal advice, and the typical ranges shown come from our own retreat guides, which you should check against the operator's written quote.
